Out of Frame

Out of Frame is an independent public arts project that is part of Zawyeh Space. Every month a new local artist is invited to interpret their work on this wall.

Frame 05 Rawan Maraqa

The project

Out of Frame is self-funded. There is no sponsor on the wall and no brief beyond the wall itself: it is offered to visual artists whose work usually lives on canvas, paper, tapestry or screen, to find out what their practice becomes when it leaves the frame.

Each artist brings their own language to the same surface. Nothing from one frame survives into the next.

This mural shares a bittersweet take on growing up, instead of the usual "happy birthday" the cake says "hanat" a phrase usually said to someone nearing the end of a tough time. It comforts the celebrant while reminding him on this reflective day, that everything is temporary, including his years.

“The Dark Horse”

Maha Abu Mailesh

The finished wall — Maha Abu Mailesh
Painted
September 2025

In this mural, Maha transforms the winning horse into a symbol of resilience and unexpected triumph. The moment the horse stands victorious becomes a metaphor for the forthcoming victory of Arab communities.

She evokes a verse from her recent series Qadimto by the poet Soud Abu Mailesh, her father, which translates to:
“I came into this world, only to depart. As if my coming was merely to pack my bags.”

This verse reflects the inner voice and awareness of the people, a readiness for change and the preparation for transformation. Here, the horse embodies strength, roots, and certainty, capturing a moment of unexpected victory with calm clarity, reflecting endurance and awareness.
